Description
Systems that spontaneously break global spacetime symmetries are ubiquitous in physics, ranging from condensed matter systems to k-dimensional membranes. In this talk, I will review the main consequences of this very breaking (prominently, the Goldstone theorem), and present the formalism to build consistent effective field theories for the system's excitations: a generalization of the CCWZ Coset Construction. After this introductory part, I will discuss the possibility (which is unique to spacetime symmetries) of having inequivalent realizations of the same symmetry breaking pattern.
