The ATLAS trigger system has been very successful in providing an efficient online event selection during the first run of the LHC, however harsher conditions are expected for Run 2 and beyond. In this talk I will briefly review the Run 1 trigger system, the challenges the trigger will face in the future , the ongoing improvements that hope to ensure a great performance of the system with details on some of the upgrades IFAE is collaborating with
