Charged particle high energy beam facilities, such as DESY (Germany) and CERN SPS (Switzerland) are useful and widespread tools for research, in particular for detector characterization. However, the limited number of such facilities means they are usually overbooked. ALBA is a synchrotron radiation facility located at Cerdanyola, which accelerates electrons up to energies of 3 GeV. These electrons could be extracted as a beam with the appropriate upgrade. In this talk, the possible upgrade of the ALBA synchrotron to deliver a beam of electrons will be briefly presented and some ideas of the possible applications of such a beam for detector instrumentation.
