Description
For the next generation of long baseline neutrino oscillation detectors very large detectors are required which at the same time should allow reconstructing the complete event. Time projection chambers (TPCs) filled with liquid argon (LAr) are the most promising approach for such tracking-calorimeters with detector masses in the range of tens of ktons. Before the construction of these detectors can start, a mandatory intermediate step is the construction of a large prototype to test the feasibility of this detector concept on large scales. The WA105 collaboration of which IFAE is member aims on the construction of a 6x6x6 m3 large LAr double phase TPC prototype. The prototype will be constructed at CERN until 2018 and will allow to study the detector performance with testbeam and cosmics.
In the talk I will present the detector concept, the challenges and the Spanish contribution to this project.
