Even in the large collaborations reducing and analysing high-energy astrophysical data, the modelling and interpretation effort is restricted to few scientists with proprietary software.
In this talk, I will describe a shift in the modelling paradigm, presenting a new generation of open-source software computing the broadband non-thermal emission of astrophysical sources from radio up to the highest gamma-ray energies.
By considering the case of high-energy emission from the jets of active galactic nuclei, I will illustrate the need for these tools not only from a mere technical point of view, but also to address crucial astrophysical questions.
