Abstract:
Some specific types of galaxies are known to point towards each other across the Universe, from very large to very small scales. The same happens with other cosmic structures, like galaxy pairs or galaxy clusters. Our understanding of these phenomena is evolving quickly as more data from large-scale galaxy surveys becomes available. In this talk, I will give an introduction to intrinsic alignments. I will highlight some of its applications for our understanding of galaxy evolution, and I will explain how it can also put constraints on the cosmological model. I will discuss open questions in the field and how we might be able to address them in the future.
