The SM prediction of a_mu^{HVP,LO}, discussed in the second White Paper of the Muon g-2 Theory Initiative (https://arxiv.org/pdf/2505.21476), is only based on lattice results. Data-based evaluations of this contribution -saturating the uncertainty of a_mu^SM and thus limiting the reach on new physics- are not averaged with it. On the one hand, e^+e^- -> pi^+ pi^- experiments are incompatible, so they cannot be combined. On the other, there are doubts about the isospin-breaking corrections required to use tau -> pi pi nu data instead. I will discuss prospects for future use of (tau) data-based computations of a_mu^{HVP,LO}.
