Description
We revisit the interpretation of a Gaussian gravitational wave background in pulsar timing array experiments as a time correlated random process. We discuss why the Fourier components of pulsar timing residuals will be correlated due to the act of windowing and show how this correlation can be easily accommodated in terms of transfer functions. The convolution between the transfer functions, the power spectrum and the spatial correlation gives the frequency-domain representation of the time-domain covariance function. The unified representation has allowed us to turn in simulations of a Gaussian signal of the gravitational wave background and a kinematic dipole.
