Description
ASTEROID (Astronomy European Infrared Detector) is a H2020 European
collaboration between research institutions and industrial partners to
develop from scratch a large infrared focal plane array.
Today large dimension infrared focal plane arrays (IR FPA) are only
available from a US company and are export restricted by ITAR, thus
Europe is until today US dependent for large format arrays in NIR and
SWIR either for space or ground-based use.
The main objective of the ASTEROID project is thus to extend the
dimension of high performance infrared FPA that can be manufactured in
Europe to the dimensions equivalent to that leading the market: a 15μm
pixel pitch FPA of 2048 x 2048 pixels.
On this presentation, I will comment some of the motivations for such
a development and roughly introduce some NIR and SWIR infrared
detectors concepts, beside comment the tasks to be performed at IFAE
as part of its work package.
