Description
The LHC collider is heading towards the High Luminosity Era, in which a much higher instantaneous luminosity will be reached. In order to deal with increased particle fluences an upgrade of the inner tracker of the ATLAS experiment is foreseen. For this upgrade the IFAE pixel group is studying several novel detector technologies: 3D silicons, HV-CMOS, 3D diamonds, LGAD. In particular 3D silicon sensors have become the baseline for the innermost layer of the new ATLAS pixel detector due to their demonstrated superior radiation tolerance. In this seminar I will present the upgrade of the ATLAS pixel detector for HL-LHC, and the results of the development and characterisation of 3D pixel sensors at IFAE.
