In the talk after a basic introduction to the working principle of a liquid argon (LAr) dual phase (DP) time projection chamber (TPC), the results of a recently published simulation study will be presented in an easily understandable way. 

The topic of the study is the charge and light production in the charge readout region of the DP TPC which has the potential to affect the performance of the detector. The possible consequences for both, the surface operation of the prototype currently constructed at CERN as also the future far detector of DUNE are shortly discussed. 

A relevant outcome of the study is that the charge production in a LAr DP TPC is not well understood and a hypothesis which might explain the difference between observed and theoretical charge gain is presented.
