Gravitational wave detection relies on accurate wave form templates to determine the properties of the sources. I review the physics behind gravitational wave emission from binary systems of black holes or neutron stars, focusing on the early inspiral phase. I show how methods from effective field theories and computational particle physics can be used to improve the accuracy of the predicted wave forms.
