In this lecture I will give an introduction to the physics questions that are studied at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. In particular, I will explain the importance of the Higgs boson, how it was discovered and what comes next in the field of High Energy Physics. Finally, I will give a few concrete examples of applications from particle physics instrumentation in the field of (bio-)medical imaging, in particular Positron Emission Tomography.
