Description
Continuous global symmetries are expected to be broken by gravity, which can lead to important phenomenological consequences. A prime example is the threat that this poses to the viability of the Peccei-Quinn solution to the strong CP problem. In this regard, wormholes are a way to be precise and quantitative about the importance of global symmetry breaking by gravity, and the subsequent implications. In this talk, I will review the status of gravitational symmetry breaking, wormholes and global symmetries. I will also discuss some new results regarding the relevance of these solutions to multi-Goldstone boson scenarios and a simple string-inspired model.
