Description
The Voxel Imaging PET (VIP) is an ambitious project financed by the European Research Council with the aim to prove the concept of using highly pixelated CdTe photo-detectors for positron emission tomography (PET) applications. This is a promising idea to overcome the limitations of the current state-of-the-art technology based on scintillating crystals and has the potential to revolutionize the PET technique and the nuclear medicine in general. Started in 2010, the project is now entering its fifth and last year and it will soon be the time to reap the fruits of our labor. I will take the chance of this week pizza meeting to give a brief overview of the project: the motivations, the main goals, the current status, and the future prospects.
